What to look for in a breast imaging second opinion

Not every online second-opinion service is built for breast imaging. Four things matter — and Second View delivers on all four:

1. Real experience with breast imaging. Your images are read by radiologists who specialize in breast imaging and do this work regularly.

2. A look at the original images, not just the written report. You upload your original DICOM images (from a CD, a USB stick or your patient portal), not just the report. With breast MRI that is essential: much of what matters — how contrast washes in and out over time, for instance — can only be judged from the original images. We accept datasets up to 2.5 GB.

3. Clear credentials. We tell you exactly who read your images and what they specialize in.

4. Straight answers about where your data lives. We process it under the GDPR, exclusively on servers in Germany (Hetzner, ISO 27001). Nothing is stored outside the EU.

Why a second opinion?

A breast MRI or mammogram usually comes at an already stressful moment — to check out a lump you can feel, after an abnormal previous result, as part of enhanced screening, or before a treatment decision. Then the report arrives in medical jargon, with terms like BI-RADS 4, enhancing mass or non-mass enhancement, and two questions tend to linger: What does this actually mean? And how sure is it?

Both are fair questions. In breast imaging, an independent second opinion is a well-established step — precisely because reading these images takes experience and focus. This page explains how a second opinion from Second View works and what to look for when you choose a service.

Read by breast imaging specialists

A second opinion is only as good as the person who writes it. Reading breast MRI and mammograms is among the most demanding work in radiology, and it is a field of its own — breast radiology, or senology as it is known in Europe.

At Second View, your breast images are read by board-certified radiologists licensed in Germany with proven experience in breast imaging, including experience gained at a university breast center. This is not a generic second opinion from “some other radiologist” — it comes from someone who reads these exact studies week in, week out.

For more on what the BI-RADS categories mean and how to read an unclear finding, see our article: Mammography: a second opinion on an unclear finding.

How it works

  • Upload your images. Send us your original MRI or mammography images (DICOM) along with the report you already have — from a CD, a USB stick or your patient portal. Up to 2.5 GB.
  • A specialist reads them. A radiologist experienced in breast imaging reviews your original images independently.
  • You get a written second opinion. A clearly worded written assessment, usually within 48 hours.

What it costs

A radiological second opinion from Second View costs €70 to €150, depending on the type and complexity of the exam. You see the price before you order — there are no hidden fees.

Privately insured in Germany? Private health insurance often reimburses the cost of a medical second opinion. Keep the invoice so you can submit it.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need my images, or is the written report enough?

With a breast MRI or mammogram, the original images usually matter more than the text. We read your original DICOM images, not just the written report — that is where most of the answer lies.

Who provides the second opinion?

Board-certified radiologists licensed to practice in Germany who specialize in breast imaging.

How quickly will I receive the second opinion?

Usually within 48 hours of receiving your complete upload.

What does it cost?

Between €70 and €150, depending on the type and complexity of the exam. The radiologist sets the price based on the work involved, and you see it before you order.

Is my data safe?

Yes. We process it under the GDPR, exclusively on servers in Germany (Hetzner, ISO 27001). Nothing is stored outside the EU.

Does a second opinion replace my own doctor?

No. It adds a second, independent expert view of your images. Treatment decisions stay with you and your own doctor.

What a second opinion can and cannot do

We give you an independent, expert second read of imaging you already have — an MRI, CT or X-ray. That read is based entirely on the images and the background you send us.

Please keep in mind:

  • A second opinion does not replace an in-person exam or treatment
  • It is not for emergencies
  • It is advisory — it gives you information to help you decide what to do next
  • We cannot make diagnoses or recommend treatments that require an in-person examination

Every consultation and report follows the professional and data protection rules that apply to physicians in Germany.

If you are unsure, or your symptoms are severe or getting worse, always contact your own doctor or emergency services (112 in Europe).
