MRI second opinion online: an independent read of your scan
Board-certified radiologists licensed in Germany read your original MRI images — brain, spine, knee, shoulder, prostate or breast — independently of the first report. Entirely online, usually within 48 hours.
No account needed · You pay only once a radiologist has accepted your case · €70 to €200
How an MRI second opinion works
- Upload your images. Send us your original MRI images (DICOM) and the report you already have — from a CD, a USB stick or your patient portal. Up to 2.5 GB, no account needed.
- A specialist reads them. A radiologist experienced in that body region accepts your case, quotes the price and reviews your original images independently of the first report.
- You get a written second opinion. A detailed assessment in plain language, usually within 48 hours. You can ask the radiologist follow-up questions.
When an MRI second opinion makes sense
An MRI report is dense with jargon, and a decision often hangs on it: wait, investigate further, or operate. A second, independent specialist read is worth having especially for:
- Spine: a herniated disc, spinal stenosis or back pain the report does not explain — more on spine second opinions.
- Knee and shoulder: a meniscus, cruciate ligament or rotator cuff finding when surgery has been suggested — see knee MRI and rotator cuff.
- Brain: an unclear lesion, microangiopathy or a meningioma on a brain MRI — see unclear lesion on a brain MRI.
- Prostate: PI-RADS 3 or 4 and the question whether a biopsy is needed — see PI-RADS on a prostate MRI.
- Breast: a breast MRI with BI-RADS 3 or 4 — more on breast MRI and mammogram second opinions.
- Before surgery or any other major treatment that rests on the MRI findings.
- When the report is brief, does not match your symptoms, or you simply cannot make sense of it.
What it costs
A radiological second opinion from Second View costs €70 to €200, depending on the type and complexity of the exam. You see the price before you pay — there are no hidden fees.
Does insurance cover it? Statutory health insurance in Germany generally does not pay for a radiological second opinion. Privately insured? Private health insurance often reimburses the cost of a medical second opinion. Keep the invoice so you can submit it.
What to look for in an online second opinion
1. Radiologists licensed in Germany. At Second View, only board-certified radiologists licensed to practice in Germany read your images — under German professional and data protection law.
2. A look at the original images, not just the written report. Much of what matters can only be judged from the DICOM images. That is why you upload your original scan, not just the report.
3. Clear prices, no payment up front. You pay only once a radiologist has accepted your case and quoted the price. If the case is declined, you pay nothing.
4. Data stays in Germany. Your images are processed under the GDPR, exclusively on servers in Germany (Hetzner, ISO 27001). Nothing is stored outside the EU.
Frequently asked questions
How does the second opinion work?
You fill in a short form at app.second-view.eu: your question, details of the exam, and confirmation that you live in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. Then you upload your images and the written report.
A board-certified radiologist reviews your documents, accepts the case and quotes the price. Only then do you pay, online. You usually receive the written second opinion digitally within 48 hours, and you can ask the radiologist follow-up questions.
When does an MRI second opinion make sense?
When the report is vague or does not match your symptoms, when surgery or another major treatment has been proposed, when a finding has been labelled “unclear” or “follow-up recommended”, or when you simply want a second, independent specialist read before you decide.
What does it cost?
Between €70 and €200, depending on the type and complexity of the exam. The radiologist sets the price based on the work involved, and you see it before you order.
Does health insurance cover the second opinion?
Usually not. In Germany, statutory health insurance (GKV) pays for a second opinion only for certain planned operations under a fixed procedure, and a radiological second opinion on your images is normally not part of that. At Second View you pay for the second opinion yourself; if you have private health insurance (PKV) or a supplementary policy, you can submit the invoice, and many insurers reimburse all or part of the cost.
When and how do I pay?
Only after a radiologist has reviewed your documents and accepted the case. You then receive a payment link and pay online through the payment provider Stripe. If the case is declined, you pay nothing. With the second opinion you receive an invoice you can submit to your insurer.
Do I need a new MRI scan?
No. The second opinion is based on the images you already have. There is no new appointment and no new scan – you only submit the original images (DICOM) and the existing report.
Do you need my images, or is the written report enough?
The original images usually matter more than the text. We read your original DICOM images, not just the written report — that is where most of the answer lies.
Which scans can I submit, and how do I get my images?
MRI, CT and X-ray exams of any body region. The original images in DICOM format work best — the files on the patient CD or in the download link from your imaging centre — together with the written report.
Your imaging centre or hospital has to give you a copy of your images on request: in Germany this is a legal right (Section 630g of the Civil Code), and across the EU the GDPR gives you the same right of access. The copy usually comes as a CD, USB stick or download link. Just ask at reception for a copy of your images for a second opinion.
Who provides the second opinion?
Board-certified radiologists licensed to practice in Germany. Depending on the body region, your case goes to a radiologist with matching experience – neuroradiology for brain and spine, musculoskeletal imaging for joints, breast imaging for breast MRI.
Can I talk to the radiologist afterwards?
You receive the second opinion in writing – detailed, and worded so that you can follow it without a medical background. If anything is unclear, you can ask the radiologist follow-up questions through the platform. A phone or video call is not part of the service.
How quickly will I receive the second opinion?
Usually within 48 hours of receiving your complete upload.
Can I use Second View from outside Germany?
Yes, if you live in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. The second opinion is prepared in Germany under German law by radiologists licensed in Germany. We are currently unable to accept requests from patients living outside these countries — including the United States and Canada.
Is my data safe?
Yes. We process it under the GDPR, exclusively on servers in Germany (Hetzner, ISO 27001). Nothing is stored outside the EU.
Does a second opinion replace my own doctor?
No. It adds a second, independent expert view of your images. Treatment decisions stay with you and your own doctor.
What a second opinion can and cannot do
We give you an independent, expert second read of imaging you already have — an MRI, CT or X-ray. That read is based entirely on the images and the background you send us.
Please keep in mind:
- A second opinion does not replace an in-person exam or treatment
- It is not for emergencies
- It is advisory — it gives you information to help you decide what to do next
- We cannot make diagnoses or recommend treatments that require an in-person examination
Every consultation and report follows the professional and data protection rules that apply to physicians in Germany.
If you are unsure, or your symptoms are severe or getting worse, always contact your own doctor or emergency services (112 in Europe).
